The Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology (CEBSIT) is one of the Centers for Excellence of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), established within the scope of the CAS Pioneer Initiative.

Taking advantage of the CAS “3 in 1”integrated system, and focusing on key directions in brain sciences and intelligence technologies, CEBSIT will undertake national level brain research projects, as well as key projects from CAS, NSFC and MoST. Based on the CAS “Innovation 2020”framework and “One-Three-Five” Strategic Planning, the Center selects and recruits innovative researchers and forms special research teams to tackle challenging problems in brain science and intelligence technology. Efficient organizational and management mechanisms will be developed to serve future research and development needs of the Center. The goal of CEBSIT is to represent the highest research level in Brain Sciences and Intelligence Technologies in China, and become one of the top brain science research centers in the world. The Center will mainly focus on the following five areas: 1) neural circuit basis of cognitive functions, 2) mechanisms, diagnosis and therapeutic interventions of brain diseases, 3) novel technologies in brain research, 4) brain modeling and intelligence information processing, and 5) brain-inspired devices and systems.

The Center is established and operated according to the principles of multi-source support, shared responsibility and resources, and coordinated planning. The principal contributing institutions are the Institute of Neuroscience and the Institute of Automation, both within CAS. The collaborating member institutions include Kunming Institute of Zoology, the University of Science and Technology of China, the Institute of Biophysics, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Wuhan Institute of Virology, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Institute of Psychology, Institute for Nutritional Sciences, Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, Institute of Computing Technology, Hefei Institute of Physical Science, Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Institute of High Energy Physics, Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Institute of Semiconductors, Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology, CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences within CAS, as well as East China University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, Third Military Medical University, , Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and Anhui USTC iFlytek Co..

The mission of CEBSIT: CEBSIT will undertake a joint-effort approach to tackle fundamental problems in the areas of Brain Sciences and Brain-inspired Intelligence Technologies. By fostering internationally-recognized talents, forming teams representing the nation’s highest research capability, and developing institutional mechanisms to facilitate collaborative efforts, CEBSIT is committed to undertake major national projects, and aim to continuously produce research results of high scientific significance and with important application values.

  The aims of CEBSIT

  1. To tackle the fundamental problems in the neural basis of cognitive functions and brain-inspired computing through interdisciplinary integration of brain science and intelligence technologies, and to produce groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

  2. To develop innovative technologies in brain research, focusing on the nation’s need for further mechanistic understanding of brain diseases and for developing early-stage diagnosis and the rapeutic intervention.

  3. Taking advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of the participating institutions, as well as the abundant available clinical resources in brain diseases and rich resources innon-human primates in China, the center aim to reach the leading edge of international brain research.

  4. Through mechanistic understanding of neural information processing, to develop brain-inspired hardware including intelligent devices, chips and robotic systems, and brain-inspired computing systems, and to lead the industry in intelligent technologies and boost the nation’s international competi.
